HOW TO HAVE A FIRM FOUNDATION BY BUILDING ON THE ROCK
How to have a Firm Foundation by building on the Rock
"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. "But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it fell. And great was its fall." - Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV.
In Matthew 7, Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount by telling a parable that we are all familiar with: The Parable of the Two Foundations. In the story, we see two men building a house. One is building his house on sand, while the other built his house on solid rock. The house built on sand fell apart. It fell apart because it did not have a strong foundation, while the other house stood firm and strong because it was built on the rock. Why is this parable essential? How can we apply its truths to our daily life? This parable determines the difference between the foolish vs. wise builders. Here are some examples:
Wise Builders
- Prepare their lives and others for eternity.
- Have discernment for every decision.
- Read their bibles daily to make sound decisions in life.
- Seek God about all their affairs of life.
- Don't live a double standard; they are 100 percent flat out for the Lord.
- Don't hang out with fools.
Foolish Builders
- Conduct their lives built on emotions and ignore the Word.
- Make bad decisions and then seek godly counsel.
- Have hidden sin in their hearts.
- Start in the spirit and end up in the flesh.
- Regularly encounter calamity in their life.
- Have constant emotional battles with never-ending personal wars in their head.
- Have a prayerless lifestyle with a huge gap in their armor.
From just a few points, you can see when we talk about storms. I'm not talking about rainstorms or thunderstorms. I am talking about trials and situations that the enemy may throw at us. Here are several examples of storms we may face in life:
- financial storms
- family storms
- emotional storms
- marital storms
- storms caused by bad decisions
- spiritual storms
- storms from the casualty of war
- storms from drug overdoses
When experiencing these storms in life, we have to realize that God is the one who gives us the victory through faith. Faith is the key that allows you to change one season to the next.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 1 John 5:4
Here are more examples of the effects of spiritual storms:
- Fosters a defeated mentality as the gospel
- Snuff out your spiritual drive by making it hard to discern the voice of the Lord from the voice of your emotions (desires) or your imagination.
- Tests your spiritual foundations to find out how strong it is.
I am writing this devotional to help you confront any storm you may be facing in life. The situation may seem bleak, and there is no way out.
Always remember this fundamental principle: TURN ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS OVER TO JESUS CHRIST.
Let's take a look at this scripture:
Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and he shall bring it to pass. Ps 37:5 KJV. This means you are to roll and repose each care of your load on Him; lean on, rely on, and be confident in Him.
He is the one that can meet any of your needs. If He can calm the stormy waves on the Sea of Galilee, He can calm any storm you encounter. The Word even promised us to be submissive to one another and be clothed with humility. Here it says, in I Peter 5:5-7 NKJV, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 6Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
We should never be a beast of burden (donkeys), but we should throw all of our problems at the feet of Jesus because He is our Burden Bearer and will take care of us. How can we handle the storms of life? Here are some essential keys:
Key 1: We need to have the Word of God as the primary foundation in our lives because THE WORD OF GOD IS WHAT GIVES YOU A STRONG HEALTHY SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION. We should never rely on human opinions but the truth of God's Word.
Key 2: Never make decisions about storms you're facing when you are tired; Samson made the worst decision in His life when he was tired and lost the source of His power.
Key 3: Don't consult with people who have no clue about how to remain constant in the Spirit of God consistently.
Key 4: The moment you embrace the Word and become consistent in living the Word out in your life, the storm will fade away quicker!!!
Key 5: God will show you on the other side of the storm and give you prophetic insight in prayer.
Final Thoughts
Read your Bible consistently and continuously be prayerful. Always listen to the voice of God as you pray and read your Bible. Build your faith by quoting the Word over your situation. And if you need help, go to a God-ordained leader that can bring strong godly counsel to point you in the right direction.
